Sony releases new promotional video PlayStation VR2 Highlights some of the key features of virtual reality headsets. The next-gen headset is still tentatively scheduled for an early 2023 release and is a PS5-exclusive accessory. Advertising for virtual reality headsets can be difficult, however, because players won’t be able to experience virtual reality in person until it’s available. It’s doubly difficult when PS VR 2 is a generation step forward from the original PS VR headset. Sony will do whatever it can, though.
Much of the trailer for the PlayStation VR2 headset focuses on the games planned for release for the device.These games include Horizon: Call of the Mountain, Firewall Ultra, no man’s sky, Resident Evil Villageand The Walking Dead Saints and Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution. This also helps to focus on upcoming VR games as PS VR2 headsets are not backward compatible with PS VR games.
The features shown in the new PlayStation VR2 video start with the improved resolution of the VR headset. Dubbed the “4K HDR Display,” the headset actually features two 2,000×2,040 displays — one for each eye. 4K or not, that’s still more than four times the resolution of the original headset. The next major feature is eye tracking, at least in games that support it.Example shown is using eye tracking for menus Firewall Ultra Select a weapon from the player’s inventory. Foveated rendering will also use eye tracking to ensure the resolution of the player’s gaze is peaked. The last headset feature shown is a 110-degree field of view, which is 10 degrees more than the original PS VR headset.
Other features shown in the trailer focus on the PlayStation VR2’s controller. These controllers feature finger touch detection, tactile button feedback, and adaptive triggers. These features are designed to make the player’s hands feel more realistic in the game.
It’s important to remember that these are only new features for PS VR2. It’s not even all of it. Sony has confirmed that the PS VR2 will feature enhanced lens positioning comfort, inside-out tracking with four head-mounted cameras, and a single-cable connection that works through the PS5’s front-facing USB port. It’s designed to address many of the biggest criticisms of the original PS VR.
Of course, there are still plenty of questions for Sony to answer. The PS VR2 doesn’t yet have a release date, nor a price. If PS VR2 games aren’t designed around those features, it doesn’t matter how many features PS VR2 supports. While the PS VR2 looks impressive on paper and in trailers, Sony still needs to work hard to convince PS5 owners to buy an expensive headset that doesn’t even support backward compatibility with the original PS VR.
This PlayStation VR 2 PS5 will be released in early 2023.
